A GUIDE FOR CAR OWNERS

Selling a financed car in Québec.

You can start a conversation about selling your car even if you still have a loan. The important part is knowing what the car will sell for, what is needed to pay off the loan, and how the difference will be handled.

Start with two numbers

First, there’s the agreed purchase price for your vehicle. I review its make, model, mileage and condition with you to discuss an offer. The amount you still owe does not, by itself, establish what the vehicle is worth.

Second, there’s the amount needed to pay off your loan. Ask your lender for a current payout statement for the intended payment date, including any amounts that apply under your agreement. Use the lender’s confirmed figure rather than estimating from your monthly payments.

We’ll confirm the purchase price and loan payoff amount before completing the transaction, so you understand whether you will receive money or need to contribute funds.

What happens to the difference?

Two examples, in Canadian dollars

The price is higher than the loan

Agreed purchase price
$20,000
Loan payoff amount
$15,000
The difference
$5,000 to you

I arrange the $15,000 loan payoff, and you receive a cheque for the remaining $5,000.

The loan is higher than the price

Agreed purchase price
$20,000
Loan payoff amount
$23,000
The difference
$3,000 for you to cover

You cover the $3,000 shortfall so the full $23,000 loan can be paid off. We confirm those arrangements before completing the purchase.

These are illustrations, not offers. Your figures depend on the agreed price and the payout amount confirmed with your lender.

If the purchase price and loan payoff amount are the same, there is no remaining amount to pay you and no shortfall for you to cover.

The steps to selling to Bash

  1. Tell me about your vehicle.

Share the year, make, model, mileage and condition. Indicate that there is an outstanding loan. Add the VIN if you have it; you can also enter the vehicle details manually.

  2. Discuss the offer and confirm the balance.

I review your details and get in touch to discuss a purchase price. We confirm the lender’s payout amount and how any difference will be handled.

  3. Agree on payment and paperwork.

I arrange the loan payoff and take care of the ownership transfer paperwork. We confirm the payment arrangements and what you need to provide before completing the sale.

  4. Arrange free pickup.

Once we agree on the details, we arrange pickup in Greater Montréal at no charge. You deal directly with me throughout the process.

The Québec debt-register check

In Québec, the RDPRM is the register used to check for registered rights affecting a vehicle, including rights connected to financing. A registration transfer and the release of a lender’s registered right are separate matters. Where a right is registered, its release must be addressed with the creditor as part of settling the debt. Read the RDPRM’s explanation of vehicle search results (French).

Confirm the repayment and release process with your lender, and keep the settlement confirmation. The register does not give your lender’s current payout amount.

What to have ready

For the first conversation, your vehicle details are enough to get started. To move toward a purchase, have these available:

  • The lender’s name and a current loan payout statement.
  • Your vehicle’s registration and the ownership information needed for the transfer.
  • The mileage, condition and any damage or repairs to discuss.
  • Your preferred pickup location within Greater Montréal.

The website form does not need your banking login or identity documents. Start with your vehicle details; I’ll explain what is needed for the next steps.

Before you get started

Do I need to pay off the loan before contacting you?

No. Tell me about the vehicle and the loan. We can discuss an offer before arranging the payoff. If the loan exceeds the agreed price, you will need to cover the difference.

Is a leased car the same thing?

No. This guide covers a vehicle with an outstanding purchase loan. If your car is leased, tell me before proceeding so we can discuss the situation and confirm the leasing company’s conditions.

Does requesting an offer commit me to selling?

No. Sending the form starts a conversation. You decide whether to proceed after we’ve discussed the offer and the purchase details.

Still paying off your car? Let’s talk.

Tell me what you drive and indicate that you have a loan. I’ll review your vehicle and get in touch to discuss an offer.
